Should I Use A Space Heater or My Gas Furnace
Customers often ask us about space heaters and whether they’re a good alternative to using their furnace while keeping their homes warm and save money. It would seem like the space heaters would use less energy when compared to a your home’s gas furnace, but that is not always the case. There are many things that should be taken into consideration such as:
- Cost of gas and electricity in your area
- Size of space being heated
- Age of the space heater
According to the Energy Department, a gas furnace costs 43% the cost of running electric heaters in a home. Also remember that gas is at an all-time low. If you are looking to heat up only a couple rooms in a large home, then a space heater would help only as supplemental heat for that small space. An example would be a family member that likes their room much warmer than everyone else. The uses for space heaters are limited. Your homes heating system is much more efficient at maintaining a warm home. If you’re having to use a space heater because of uneven heating you might want to have us take a look at your existing equipment. Sometimes we can make minor adjustments with the ducting to make the cold spots go away.
At Heartland Quality Heating and Cooling, it’s our goal to make your home comfortable and safe. Remember that an average of 3,000 fires are caused by space heaters a year in the U.S. according to the National Fire Protection Association. So if you continue using a space heater inspect it on a regular basis.
